Mustangs - A History

From its first year of production in 1964 through the present day models, the Ford Mustang has been the trend setter of pony cars. This classic two door muscle car has endured through the years to become one of the most popular muscles cars around the world. The Ford Mustang is truly a muscle car icon.

In 1964 the first Mustangs in production borrowed parts from the Falcon and the Fairlane. The project production and sales forecasts were a mere 100,000 cars for the Mustang's introductory year. Within three months, this record-setting car exceeded this number, and the year-end sales totals mounted over 300,000 cars, a record for its time.

The twin cove instrument panel allowed for larger instruments while the steering wheel included a larger padded center. In 1968, this pony's engineers added front seat shoulder straps, side marker lights, and introduced the 302 small block engine, which had been built to meet emissions requirements.

From 1969 through 1973 the Ford Mustang grew in body size. By 1973, the Mustang was no longer the sleek pony car it had originally been designed to be. The larger body size had decreased handling capabilities, making it harder to corner, and the extra weight made the car slower. Despite the availability of the 429 big block engine, the Mustang had become less popular as a muscle car.

Engineers reduced the body size of the Mustang in 1974. The smaller size increased the handling, but the addition of required emissions equipment made it heavier and slower. From 1974 through 1978 the Mustang lost its appeal as a muscle car altogether. In 1976 the Cobra II was introduced, and in 1978 the King Cobra was produced. Both of these models included changes in performance, engineering, and style as an effort to put the Ford Mustang back on the track and in the winner's circle.

GT SpoilerThe Mustang underwent numerous style, performance, and engineering change between 1979 and 1993. The 1979 Ford Mustang was used as an Indianapolis 500 pace car. In 1983 the 5 speed transmission was introduced. Changes in transmission, engine, and style have aided in increasing the Mustang's popularity.

Then in 1994, Ford designers and engineers overhauled the pony car, giving it a new sleek look and improved performance. Changes included a shift from the classic 302 small block to 4.6 L engine, which had more power. The changes in body style, performance, and handling put the new Mustang on the frontline once again.

Ford gave the Mustang another overhaul in 2004, introducing a completely new design. The lighter body, faster engine, and better maneuvering of these new Mustangs made them very desirable. Today, the Mustang has undergone other changes, and it has mounted to the top of the pony car list. Mustang enthusiasts young and old enjoy the added horsepower, increased handling, and classy look of these modern muscle cars.
