Mustang Savvy
What do you get when you combine the vision of professional drifter Vaughn Gittin Jr with some of the most talented tuners and car builders in North America? Something very special, that's what...
As someone probably said at some point, there are Mustangs, and then M? there are Mustangs. While the original '64 model is a bit cliche, the '69-'71 fastback really does the trick. I don't care that it drives like a Mk3 Transit; just look at it! It even sounds as good cranking and bursting into life as it does at 5500rpm.
But when I heard about this black drift Mustang, 1 had visions of tasteless add-ons and a salvageable original '69 being chopped up into some horror show. Well, 1 needn't have worried. This thing is absolutely incredible, and it's all brand new. Owner Vaughn Gittin Jr, a drift god in the US, wanted to build a serious Mustang to his exact spec.
Gittin officially announced the J Mustang RTR-X project in 2010, after planning it since late 2009. Not only is it his own car, but Vaughn and RTR teamed up with the Need For Speed racing video game franchise to build it.
Ford have recently announced the mental 2011 Mustang RTR, as well as an even more limited production carbon-fibre Mustang RTR-C. These two super-serious Mustangs were the inspiration for this 1969 Fastback. In Vaughn's own words, "Initially, I was thinking of doing a 2011 Ford Mustang for this, but after a lot of thought and discussion I felt that building a classic Mustang would be amazing - plus I've always wanted to build a badass '69 that was aggressive, slammed, functional, unique and would perform on both track and street.
But the basis of the '69 is in fact a 2010 - there's nothing on this car that left Dearborn the year America put a man on the moon. That's due to a healthy classic repro market that sees Ford licensing Dynacorn to build all-new 1969 Fastback shells.
"I spent a lot of time searching for examples of what 1 wanted with regards to exterior styling and performance," says Gittin. "Wide arches, an aggressive front spoiler and a tasteful rear spoiler were all musts. Andy Blackmore then applied his superhuman design skills."
One of the main ideas was to drop the car to the floor and keep 50 or 60 degrees of steering angle for drifting whilst retaining proper suspension geometry, something not really possible with a standard chassis. The answer to this dilemma came from legendary Washingtonbased chassis expert Art Morrison, who was enlisted to build the custom front suspension. At the rear end - well, there are no stock springs here either. "I went to Maier Racing for an old-school but totally effective cantilever rocker-style type of shock - setup for the rear. It would allow for the extremely low ride height we f were going for," recalls Gittin.
With chassis basics sorted, it was time to choose a suitable engine and gearbox. It didn't take long to decide on a brand-new crated Ford Racing 302 Boss 5ltr V8. This has over 470bhp and revs to well over 7000rpm thanks to Kinsler ITB fuel injection. The gearbox is an equally new Ford Racing Boss 302 Rl six-speed. "I wanted it to be clean under the hood. You only see some iw wiring, the engine and its plumbing. Some might not even be able to tell if the engine is fuel injected or carburetter," notes Gittin.
Not that the engine would remain standard - that would be too easy. Vaughn went with a MoTeC M800 ECU, and MoTeC also did the engine wiring and tuning.
What's that about wheels and brakes you ask? "Insane wheels with huge lips and proper fitment were a must. I opted for a set of Work Meisters with the lip and offset charts maxed out, wrapped in Falken RT615-K tyres." For the brakes, Gittin went straight to Wilwood. "They designed an incredible setup for the RTR-X and have saved me on more than one occasion on the track!"
"As for the interior, I wanted to mix some modern stuff with the late '60s/early '70s. Like my first street drift car, I decided to have a full interior up front and everything behind the seats raw. Taking inspiration from old racecars, I chose classic diamond-shaped black leather as well as old-style toggle switches. To add a touch of modernity I added a little bit of carbon fibre and Alcantara."
So that was the vision Gittin had for the perfect streetable drift Mustang. But while ideas are all very well, you need the right people to build them. So Gittin approached the Kozeluh Twins, Eric 'Grim' and Marc 'Koz,' of Twins Turbo. Gitt in, Eric and Marc then headed over to Steen Chassis. They built the chassis, including mounting the Art Morrison subframe, fabricating wheel tubs for both the front and the rear and fitting a very tight roll cage.
Gary Steen re-engineered the rear suspension to be a three-link set up, eliminating the torque arm that would've been bouncing on the bottom of the seat. Gittin also decided to go with a collapsible steering shaft in case he ever bent the car, while the tunnel was raised for the propshaft and box.
"Almost exactly a year from its conception, I was able to take the Mustang on a maiden voyage. We had a few little gremlins, but after 15 minutes I accelerated hard, kicked the clutch, threw it into a drift and it worked!" says Gittin. Mission accomplished, we'd say.
