2010 SMU Football Predictions
The Mustangs recorded the best turnaround in college football last season, going from 1-11 to 8-5, and then topped it off with a 45-10 blowout of Nevada in the 2009 Hawaii Bowl. It was their first bowl win in 20 years. Now Coach June Jones and his run and gun offense will look for even loftier heights in 2010 including another bowl bid, a shot at finishing atop the conference and possibly into the national rankings.
If so they're going to need to fill some big holes left by the departure of star seniors Emmanuel Sanders, Mitch Enright and Chase Kennemer. The Mustangs returns a solid group of starters including eight on offense and six on defense. Their fate may rest on the ability of their defense to take pressure off of a still developing offense.
Here's a closer look at the 2010 Southern Methodist Mustangs to help make your College Football wagers winners.
Offense:
SMU's offense ranked 5th in the Conference USA, setting new school records in passing yards, points, and total yardage gained in 2009.
With so many young starters last year -- 13 were freshmen or sophomores--there will much work to do to keep up the intensity on the offensive side of the football.
Replacing Sanders, the school's all-time leader in career catches, touchdown catches and receiving yards, will not be an easy task. But Jones has two top prospects to choose from. Senior Aldrick Robinson and junior Cole Beasley. Robinson seems the likelier of the two, and has explosive speed off the line. He was named to the All-Conference USA third team and finished the 2009 season with an 800-yard season averaging 17.0 yards per catch. Over his collegiate career he has snagged 116 passes for over 2,000 and 16 TDs.
Beasley, who started seven games and saw action in 12, managed to finish 4th in receiving last season and will be a nice fit opposite Robinson.
Coach Jones, who is known for building his offenses around the quarterback position, will look to freshman Kyle Padron. For not being the starter at the beginning of last season, Padron sure looked like a veteran signal caller by the end of the year, completing 67 percent of his passes for nearly 2,000 yards resulting in 12 TDs, while throwing just four INTs. He set a school-record with 460 yards passing and two touchdowns along with MVP honors in the 2009 Hawaii Bowl. The sophomore really came into his own displaying leadership and the ability to step up in the "big games."
With the exception of senior Mitch Enright at center, the o-line is nearly intact. Freshman Ben Hughes will be a likely replacement and his job will critical in reinforcing a line that allowed 36 sacks last year. He will get some help from veteran tackles J.T. Brooks and Kelvin Beachum.
They will also be expected to open the holes for the Mustang's running game, which may resemble a lame horse without NFL bound rusher Shawnbrey McNeal.
Sophomore Zach Line and freshman Darryl Fields will share the backfield duties as neither has shown they alone can fill the role.
Defense:
Much emphasis will be put on the defense and despite already being stout--ranking No. 6, allowing 27.6 points per game--will be expected to improve as last year's youngsters continue to mature.
The Mustangs return a number of defensive starters, although last year's leading tackler, LB Chase Kennemer, and the team's leader in interceptions, DB Rock Dennis, have graduated.
Along the line of scrimmage will be junior DE Taylor Thompson and DT Mike O'Guin. Both are big and athletic defenders will be able to rush the passer as well as stand up strong against the run. Thompson had 40 tackles, 5.5 sacks, along with four pass breakups last season.
Even without Kennemer, the second row is pungent. Sophomore linebackers Youri Yenga, Pete Fleps and Ja'Gared Davis are coming along and have made strides at the position during their rookie seasons. Look for them to raise the level of intensity as with more experience.
2010 Prediction: Second in the C-USA West: With a good number of returning starters there's still a need to replace a few key seniors. But the feeling around the SMU camp is that the team should find enough wins to build on last year's performance. The team's chemistry is solid and the talent and experience are there for another run to a bowl game.
