Hood Scoop – For Better Performance In An Elegant Simple Way
The power in the engine of a vehicle is generated by the combustion of the mix of air and fuel. A continuous supply of air is necessary for the engine to function. Instead of pumping air into the engine advantage is taken of the fact that the vehicle itself moves at some speed. Scoop is a sort of funnel or vent in the bonnet of a car, with its opening in the direction in which the vehicle is moving. As the car moves forward the air rushes in the vent in the opposite direction. The air is carried to the engine through a tube or as an additional feature an air intake is installed for this purpose. Sometimes advantage is taken of a high pressure area created near the windshield and the opening of the scoop faces the windshield that is in a direction opposite to that of a normal scoop.
The car owners have the scoop installed in the bonnet to get the benefit of better utilization of fuel. It also serves as a cool looking feature. Another advantage of the hood scoop is that the air which gets in is cool air. Cold air is beneficial for full combustion as the air inside the engine compartment gets heated which is not conducive to full utilization of the fuel. If the car moves at great speed and the scoop is properly shaped the air would rush in with high pressure which would further help combustion. These are therefore very useful in racing cars. High pressure cool air means that more of air is compressed in a given space and hence combustion of fuel is better.
Hood scoops are a simple vent which help improve engine efficiency. They cost very little as no moving parts or high engineering is involved in making it. Sometimes instead of making the scoop a part of the hood, it is a part of the air cleaner in the engine and it juts out through a hole in the hood.
