Ford EcoBoost: An Affordable Green Option in Auto Industry
In this era when automakers are busy promoting and developing alternative fuel vehicles, Ford has been remained confident with the conventional internal combustion engine using the EcoBoost technology which the company claims to be the most effective in fuel economy as well cuts down the CO2 emissions.
The EcoBoost engine is a typical four cylinder or six cylinder engines with a turbocharger and an advanced direct injection technology. This small EcoBoost engine is designed to deliver better power and torque along with large displacement and technically the engine saves up to 20% in fuel consumption and 15% reduction in the CO2 emissions. Although the hybrids and electric vehicles are more effective, this EcoBoost engine is quite affordable and a better alternative compared to the expensive green vehicle technologies.
Ford's EcoBoost series engines are available in three variants with 2.0L and 1.6L and have also announced recently a 1.0L three cylinder engine for the EcoBoost family. However the first EcoBoost engine was a V6 which was seen in the Lincoln MKR Concept car. This engine delivered power and torque equivalent to a V8 engine. But the concept of EcoBoost wasn't implemented smoothly. This project was announced by the CEO Alan Mulally when Ford was lagging behind in sales expressing that Ford is going to come up with a new affordable solution to reduce the harmful emissions and at the same time boost the power without consuming extra gas. The results were immediately seen on a new Ford Taurus SHO which was replaced by a new 3.5L V6 engine developing a massive power of 365hp and at the same time 350lb-ft of torque. Customers who were worried about the gas guzzling F-150 pickups were happy to purchase the new F-150 pickups powered by the new V6 EcoBoost engine capable of towing up to 11,300 lbs.
However the most important contribution in the EcoBoost engine being such a great success is mainly due to the advanced direct injection technology. With this advancement the fuel is made into fine spray and injected directly into the engine cylinders rather than into the intake manifold in conventional fuel injection systems. The ford injector is placed to the side of each cylinder and adjacent to the spark plug and sprays the fuel inside the cylinders at a pressure of around 2,150 psi. In addition to the injection system, the turbocharger helps to increase the power output without increasing the size of the engine.
Realizing the success of this technology, Ford is planning to introduce 2014 Mustang with a twin-turbo EcoBoost engine and also rumoured that the company is working on a V8 EcoBoost engine to be fitted in a 2012 Shelby GT500 which is assumed to a 500hp engine. Even though EcoBoost is not the final answer to fuel saving technologies, it still is an example of finding out a simpler alternative which also ensures a responsive driving experience.
